Hybrid Cloud Deployment: The Best of Both Worlds.

Introduction

Have you ever wondered about the cloud? I'm not talking about white floating masses of water in the sky, I'm talking about Cloud computing, a rapidly growing and expanding technology for businesses over the internet. It can be hard to pinpoint what the best cloud deployment options are to implement.  Within the cloud, there are four main deployments that you can choose, public, private, community, and hybrid. Each deployment has its pros and cons, however, the Hybrid cloud continues to grow in popularity among businesses proving itself to be the future number one choice for businesses dealing with the cloud. Before we get started, To understand the spike in popularity we must first dissect the various cloud deployments.



Private Cloud

Pirate cloud is exactly what its name indicates. It is a deployment model that enables you to access data through private environments that are usually run by you, the business, and not a cloud service provider (CSP). This infrastructure increase security but also increases costs. It also has the added effect of not being as scalable as other deployments.

·        High security

·        Limited scalability

·        High Costs



Public Cloud

In recent years the public cloud has been the most popular cloud deployment. Public cloud allows you to use software and tools over the internet without the hassle of upkeeping them yourself. This lowers the cost since it is only subscription-based or pay-per-use. However, the risk for security and privacy issues also increases since you no longer have control over protecting your own data. On the plus side at least, your company will be able to easily scale the services with the public cloud.

·        Low security

·        Has the highest scalability from other deployments

·        Low cost with Pay-Per-Use




Community Cloud

A community cloud is a deployment that works by pinning multiple organizations together that share a similar interest. The security is good, however, the scalability is limited since the organizations have to have identical requirements to make it work since they are the ones who control the deployment. As for the price, it’s not quite as high as private but more than public cloud.

·        Multiple organizations are the holder

·        Good security

·        Limited scalability

·        Relatively high cost



Hybrid Cloud

Finally, we can talk about Hybrid Cloud. Hybrid cloud works by joining public cloud and private cloud. This gives the benefits of both, which include the cheap costs of public cloud and the scalability of public cloud. Furthermore, a Hybrid cloud also gains the security of the private cloud allowing you to move sensitive workload and data to protected parts of the cloud. Flexibility is increased with the ability to pick and choose where the workload and data will be.

·        Cloud Service provider  and your organization are the holders

·        Good security, although, not as good as private cloud

·        High scalability

·        Low cost with pay-per-use

 

Testing Hybrid Cloud.

Numerous tests have been run to demonstrate the benefits of Hybrid Cloud over the other deployments. When run side by side using IaaS, the Hybrid cloud deployment Model (HCDM) was found to be more secure than the public cloud. This was the case because HCDM used a Secure Shell protocol (SSH) to transfer authentication information, whereas Public Cloud used Quick UDP protocol (QUDP). Both Protocols are connected to a Private IP. This created a major difference in security because SSH uses 128-bit encryption improving its security.

HCDM was also tested on its data transfer speed. The results show that in a neutral internet traffic range data transfer into HCDM had a speed of around 11.453 KB/s. In that same test data transfer to Public Cloud had a speed of around 106 KB/s. This means that HCDM was found to have a data transfer speed around 100 times faster than that of the Public Cloud.

What does it all mean?

All cloud deployments have differing strengths and weaknesses.  The tests conducted pinned Hybrid Cloud against Public and Private Cloud, which are the two deployments Hybrid Cloud is comprised of. The tests proved HCDM to have superior security over Public Cloud. The security was on par with Private Cloud. Likewise, HCDM was shown to also be 100 times faster than Public Cloud in data transfer completely blowing its competition out of the water. For these factors, there is no question as to why the Hybrid cloud has been booming in popularity among businesses. It truly is the best of both worlds.
